Trauma shows up in birth.

We are here to recognize it, hold space for you and walk along-side of you.

Trauma Informed Care (TIC)

What is trauma-informed care? Trauma-informed care is a compassionate, intentional approach to healthcare that recognizes how past experiences—whether personal, generational, or systemic—can shape the way individuals move through care today. It is grounded in the belief that healing begins with safety, trust, and empowerment, not assumptions or judgment. Trauma-informed care prioritizes consent, clear communication, and emotional awareness, allowing people to feel in control, respected, and deeply seen. It challenges providers to slow down, listen closely, and create environments where care doesn’t just treat the body—but supports the whole person.

BICM and trauma-informed care.

At Birth in Color Midwifery, we integrate trauma-informed care into every aspect of our practice. We recognize that many individuals carry personal, generational, or systemic trauma into their birth experiences, and we are committed to creating a space that feels safe, supportive, and empowering. Our approach centers on compassion, informed choice, and trust—honoring your story at every step.

Active Listening

Listening is at the heart of trauma-informed care. It’s more than hearing words—it’s holding space for someone’s story without judgment, interruption, or assumption. When we truly listen, we affirm a person’s experience, build trust, and allow healing to begin. In trauma-informed care, listening is a powerful act of respect, validation, and safety.

Compassionate

Compassion is essential in trauma-informed care because it reminds us to see the whole person, not just their symptoms or situation. It creates a foundation of empathy, patience, and understanding—allowing individuals to feel safe, supported, and worthy of care. Compassion softens fear, builds connection, and helps transform clinical interactions into meaningful, healing experiences.

Acknowledging Triggers

Acknowledging triggers is a vital part of trauma-informed care because it helps prevent re-traumatization and fosters emotional safety. By recognizing that certain words, actions, or environments can activate past trauma, providers can respond with sensitivity and adapt care accordingly. This awareness builds trust, empowers the individual, and creates a space where healing can truly begin.

Our Commitment to TIC

What does TIC means to BICM?

Trauma-informed care is an approach to healthcare that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and actively works to create safe, supportive environments for healing. It means understanding that past experiences—such as abuse, loss, medical mistreatment, discrimination, or systemic injustice—can deeply influence how someone feels during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.

At Birth in Color Midwifery, trauma-informed care means we center your emotional safety just as much as your physical wellbeing. We listen without judgment, offer choices, explain procedures clearly, and ask for consent every step of the way. We’re also mindful of triggers—sights, sounds, words, or situations that may unintentionally bring up past trauma. Our team works gently and intentionally, adjusting care as needed so you always feel seen, heard, and in control of your experience.

In short, trauma-informed care is about respecting your story, protecting your peace, and building trust—because healing and empowerment go hand in hand.

Why is TIC important to BICM?

Trauma-informed care is deeply important to Birth in Color Midwifery because our mission is rooted in equity, dignity, and healing—especially for communities historically harmed or ignored by the healthcare system. We know that Black and Brown birthing people often face systemic racism, medical trauma, and cultural dismissal, which can leave lasting emotional and physical scars. By practicing trauma-informed care, we are actively working to break those cycles and create a birth space that is safe, affirming, and empowering.

This approach allows us to meet each person where they are, honoring their lived experiences and restoring trust in healthcare. It’s not just about preventing harm—it’s about creating a foundation of care that centers choice, voice, and respect. Trauma-informed care aligns with our core values: to listen deeply, serve intentionally, and support every family with compassion and cultural humility. It’s how we turn care into a form of justice.

Why us knowing is important.

At Birth in Color Midwifery, we know that trauma is a part of many people’s stories—whether it comes from past births, medical experiences, or life beyond the healthcare system. We don’t ignore it. We honor it.

Acknowledging that trauma exists allows us to show up for you in a way that is gentle, respectful, and healing. Trauma can live in the body, and during pregnancy and birth, it can resurface. That’s why we take the time to understand your journey—so we can provide care that centers your safety, autonomy, and emotional well-being.

This is more than just avoiding the activation of triggers—it’s about building trust, restoring power, and creating a space where you feel seen, heard, and in control. Sharing your story helps us support you in reclaiming your birth experience and, if you’re ready, finding healing along the way.

Holding space is a choice and we choose to do it every single time.
