Midwifery Full Spectrum
“We want to change birth outcomes with the care we are delivering.”
Prenatal Care
Midwifery prenatal care is centered on holistic, personalized support that respects the natural process of pregnancy while prioritizing the well-being of both the birthing person and baby. Midwives take the time to build relationships with their clients, offering extended visits that include thorough physical assessments, nutritional guidance, emotional support, and education on physiological birth. This model of care encourages informed decision-making, empowering families to take an active role in their pregnancy and birth journey. By fostering trust and continuity of care in a comfortable, home-like setting, midwifery prenatal care promotes confidence, reduces unnecessary interventions, and enhances the overall birth experience.
BICM offers routine prenatal care starting as early as 8- 12 weeks gestation. Below is our typical schedule for families we are serving.
12-28 weeks, seen monthly
28-36 weeks, seen every 2 weeks
36-37 weeks HOME VISIT scheduled
36-42 weeks, seen weekly at minimum
Labs and Choice
BICM educates our families to ensure they understand their testing options' availability. We also work very closely with our labs to ensure you get the lowest cost to make it affordable.
Initial labs are taken in-house at your initial prenatal appointment and offers a comprehensive insight into various items that we discuss in great detail.
Oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) is provided under our care. We offer this between 25 and 29 weeks gestation. We utilize the Fresh Test as an alternative to the standard glucose-based drink. Please ask us questions about this test if you have any.
We also offer functional labs to gain a closer understanding of your health and pregnancy from a wholistic perspective. Functional labs in pregnancy provide a deeper look at nutritional status, hormone balance, and overall wellness beyond standard lab testing. They can help identify deficiencies (like iron, vitamin D, or thyroid imbalances) that may affect pregnancy and birth outcomes. These insights support a more personalized approach to prenatal care.
Labor and Delivery
BICM prides itself in ensuring our families understand labor and delivery management. Labor and delivery in an out-of-hospital setting unfolds in a space of comfort, trust, and autonomy, where the birthing person is free to move, eat, and birth instinctively. Without the constraints of routine interventions, labor follows its natural rhythm, supported by the quiet presence of skilled midwives who offer hands-on comfort, encouragement, and clinical expertise. The home environment is intimate and familiar, allowing the body to work in harmony with the process. As the baby emerges, the first breaths are taken in a space filled with warmth, love, and the gentle hands of caregivers who honor the power of physiological birth.
Labor and delivery with Birth in Color Midwifery is a deeply personalized, culturally grounded experience that centers your autonomy and intuition. We honor birth as a sacred rite of passage, creating a calm, supportive environment where you feel safe, seen, and in control. Our team brings both clinical skill and ancestral wisdom, supporting your body’s natural process with patience and presence. Every birth is guided with respect, compassion, and a commitment to honoring your unique story.
Ultrasounds
Ultrasounds are diagnostic tests. BICM does not require one to have one done but may be recommended based on individual circumstances. At BICM, we support informed decision-making, ensuring you understand ultrasound technology's benefits, risks, and limitations.
Early ultrasound (typically prior to 14 weeks gestation) is utilized most often to help in determining one’s expected due date.
A fetal anatomy scan (typically completed between 18-22 weeks gestation) is a detailed ultrasound that checks your baby’s overall development, including the brain, heart, spine, organs, and limbs. It also evaluates the health of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and umbilical cord. If desired, this scan can also reveal your baby’s sex.
Growth ultrasound is utilized to determine fetal growth if there is any concern related to growth of your baby.
BICM can offer any of these scans in-home for additional fees. BICM makes no profit but will put you in touch with the company directly for convenient scheduling.
Postpartum
Our comprehensive postpartum care is rooted in profound continuity and attentive, in-home support during the critical early weeks. Instead of a rushed checkup, midwives and our postpartum care nurses provide multiple home visits, ensuring a smooth transition for both parent and baby. We offer hands-on breastfeeding guidance, holistic recovery support, and emotional care, recognizing that healing and adjustment extend beyond the physical. With a focus on whole-family well-being, midwifery postpartum care honors rest, nourishment, and individualized support, allowing new parents to recover in their own space, surrounded by the familiar, with a trusted care provider just a call away.
We offer intentional debriefing to help you process your birth experience, ask questions, and feel seen in your transition to parenthood. Our care centers on your physical recovery, mental wellness, and cultural needs every step of the way. Each team member is certified as a Maternal Mental Community Health Worker.
We see families well into the 4th trimester, through 12 weeks after your baby has been born. Typically, this is a period of least interaction or follow-up, not with BICM.
BPP and NSTs
For home-birth clients, Biophysical Profiles (BPPs) and Non-Stress Tests (NSTs) may be recommended in the third trimester if there are concerns about the baby’s well-being, such as going past your due date or noticing reduced fetal movement. These tests provide essential information about how your baby is doing in the womb and help guide safe decision-making while still supporting your plan for a home-birth. They’re typically done in collaboration with a trusted collaborative provider when needed.
A Non-Stress Test (NST) is a noninvasive way to check how your baby’s heart rate responds to movement. It is usually performed in the third trimester. It checks your baby’s heart rate in response to movement, using external monitors on your belly. A “reactive” result means your baby’s heart rate increases with movement, which is reassuring. A “non-reactive” result may require further testing to ensure everything is okay.
A Biophysical Profile (BPP) is an ultrasound that checks your baby’s well-being by looking at movement, breathing, muscle tone, and amniotic fluid levels. It gives a score out of 8 or 10, with higher scores being reassuring. BPPs are sometimes used in the third trimester to help ensure your baby is healthy while continuing with your homebirth plan.
Newborn Care Your Way
Many families seek home birth to feel and know that their newborn will be respected, and as parents, your choices in caring for them will be validated. We take the time in your prenatal care to go into great depth to educate you as a family unit about the newborn care screens and procedures offered.
Newborn care is essential for ensuring a healthy newborn and answering all your questions or concerns. We offer newborn care for your baby’s first three months.
With Birth in Color Midwifery, your baby’s first care happens right at home—on your terms. We offer newborn procedures like the initial newborn assessment (head to examination), vitamin K injection to support blood clotting, erythromycin eye ointment to prevent infection, the newborn metabolic (heel prick) screening, and the CCHD heart screen. Each is fully explained so you can make empowered, informed choices. We honor your role as the decision-maker in your baby’s care from the very start.
“We have a multidisciplinary team that allows us to offer a wealth of comprehensive services.”
