The Maternal Access Project reframes midwifery as a right, not a luxury. It is BICM’s global initiative to ensure that every birthing person—no matter where they live—can access culturally centered, high quality, and consistent midwifery care.
Midwifery Anywhere Program (MAP) is a revolutionary membership-based program designed to bring midwifery mentorship, education, and community to anyone, anywhere — no matter your zip code, background, or birth philosophy. Rooted in the mission of Birth in Color Midwifery to expand culturally congruent care and dismantle geographic and systemic barriers, this program creates a national web of mentorship and midwifery access.
This program is led exclusively by the Birth in Color Midwifery (BICM) midwives. M.A.P. for families is more than a service-it’s a shift in how care is given, trust is built, and birth is experienced.
Midwifery Anywhere Program (MAP)
Utilizing a groundbreaking feature of care with Birth in Color Midwifery is the integration of telehealth midwifery kits — an innovative, trademarked solution created by Sabrina Foulks-Thomas, founder of Birth in Color and visionary behind the MAP program. These custom-designed kits allow families to participate in monitored prenatal care from the comfort of their homes, using tools that are safe, accessible, and guided by licensed midwives in real time. From blood pressure cuffs to fetal dopplers and culturally relevant education materials, the kits bring clinical care into the home while honoring the unique needs of each family. This approach transforms virtual care into a powerful, connected experience — turning distance into access and expanding the reach of midwifery across the country.
This innovation is a core element of the Maternal Access Project, a larger initiative led by Birth in Color to address maternal health disparities through culturally aligned, community-centered care models. The Midwifery Anywhere Program (MAP) operates as a sub-project within this vision, utilizing the telehealth kits to make mentorship, prenatal support, and guided midwifery care possible no matter where a family lives. Through this model, Birth in Color Midwifery not only redefines how care is delivered — it reclaims who that care truly serves.
